2023 wasn't a good year for the health-care sector, but some investors expect it to make a comeback this year — highlighting biotech and medical tech as areas to watch. But now, Citi believes that "astute investors may find themselves with a trove of rebound opportunities." Citi's top picks in biotech include Biomea Fusion , Alnylam Pharmaceuticals , and Immunovant . Jared Holz, health-care sector strategist at Mizuho Securities Americas, named biotech firm Biogen as one of his top trading ideas for 2024. "Biotech has commanded everyone's attention, but the recovery of many best-in-class medical device companies post the GLP-1 selloff has been remarkable," Orton said.

Signage is seen outside the Blackstone Group headquarters in New York City, U.S., January 18, 2023. Anthos, which does not generate any revenue because its products have not yet hit the market, could be worth several billion dollars in a potential sale, significantly more than the $250 million that Blackstone invested when it founded Anthos in 2019, the sources said. The company's anticoagulants have made significant progress in late-stage clinical trials, the sources added. Blackstone is working with investment bankers to explore a sale of Anthos, the sources said, cautioning that no deal is certain and requesting anonymity because the matter is confidential. Anthos has licensed from Novartis an antibody used in the development of its blood thinners and granted it a minority stake.

Branded as Amvuttra, vutrisiran is also approved in the U.S. to treat nerve damage in adult patients with hereditary ATTR amyloidosis. Evercore ISI's Julian Emanuel says it's time to buy "sector neutral" stocks with earnings momentum but lagging price momentum. Names with earnings momentum Emanuel told CNBC on Tuesday that there's a group of stocks whose earnings momentum is "superior to peers." "We recommend remaining fully invested, shifting focus to a sector neutral quant screen of stocks whose EPS momentum is better than peers yet whose price momentum lags since the March inflection to Maximum Momentum," he wrote in a July 23 note. "Such 'Earnings Mo' to Price Mo'" stocks could be expected to outperform as price momentum leaders 'cool off,'" he wrote. But he said that the long-term story is "exceptionally robust," thanks to an expected "productivity boost" from China.

July 20 (Reuters) - Vir Biotechnology's (VIR.O) shares plunged 45% to a more than three-year low on Thursday after the company's experimental antibody therapy to prevent a type of flu failed to meet its goals in a mid-stage trial. The biotechnology firm, which came into prominence through its COVID-19 antibody therapy sotrovimab developed in partnership with GSK plc (GSK.L), lost over $1 billion in market capitalization in early trade hit by the therapy's failure. The company said it will conduct further analyses on the trial data to "better understand these outcomes", but TD Cowen analyst Phil Nadeau does not expect the therapy to undergo further development. The company is developing antibody therapies against hepatitis B and D, for which data is expected later this year, and also has development programs for COVID-19, HIV and influenza. July 17 (Reuters) - BridgeBio Pharma Inc's (BBIO.O) experimental drug for a rare heart disease showed significant improvement in patients in a late-stage study, sending its shares surging 65% on Monday. BridgeBio's drug improved survival by 81% in the study patients compared to 74% on the placebo, and also reduced frequency of heart disease-related hospitalization by 50%. The California-based company also provided additional data comparing it with Pfizer's drug. Acoramidis showed 92% improvement on heart failure test, compared to patients on placebo and Pfizer's drug at 30 months. The additional data suggests that BridgeBio's drug was better than tafamidis in controlling the disease, said TD Cowen analyst Tyler Van Buren.

Even shares of drug companies that do not have pending deals but are seen by analysts and investors as potential acquisition targets were hit. FTC officials did not respond to a request for comment on whether they planned to challenge any other pharmaceutical acquisitions. "We could see similar challenges to the Pfizer/Seagen deal" BMO analysts wrote in a note, arguing that the FTC could target other major drug companies with the resources to engage in bundling. UNDER THE RADARConversely, investors and analysts are hoping that smaller pharmaceutical acquisitions will continue to fly under the radar of regulators. Chief Judge Colm Connolly's ruling for Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc (ALNY.O) came just over a month after a different judge in Delaware rejected Moderna's similar motion in another vaccine patent lawsuit. Representatives for Moderna and Alnylam did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Moderna made the same argument in a motion to dismiss part of another patent lawsuit brought by Arbutus Biopharma Corp (ABUS.O) and Genevant Sciences GmbH. U.S. District Judge Mitchell Goldberg rejected Moderna's motion in that case last year and said it had not yet proven the government was more than an "incidental beneficiary" of the shots. Goldberg denied the motion for a second time last month after the federal government backed Moderna's position.

Private equity acquires a taste for drug development
  + stars: | 2023-01-09 | by ( David Carnevali | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +6 min
Jan 9 (Reuters) - Private equity firms that deemed drug development too risky for their liking in the past are increasingly investing in the sector, raising dedicated funds and coming up with deals that compensate them for the uncertainty involved. These deals are not structured as the leveraged buyouts that private equity firms are mostly known for. In most cases, the drug makers start paying the money back to the private equity firms when the drug is being developed, either by issuing equity, tapping cash on hand or borrowing. They also share a slice of the newly developed drug's revenue with the private equity firms once it's approved. Private equity firms also provide capital to spin out drugs into new companies.
Investors looking for cover this year would have done well if they sought a safe haven in large-cap pharmaceutical stocks, a trend that is likely to continue into 2023. The Inflation Reduction Act provided some clarity around drug pricing that should help health-care stocks. The average price target, according to FactSet, is $62, or nearly 40% above the stock's closing price on Tuesday. Gene therapies in focus Investors will be closely watching the progress of several gene therapies, according to Phipps. "Yes, these are expensive therapies," Phipps said.
